Course Aims

To be able to care for people at risk of self-harm and suicide, and to understand how to deal with ligatures

Learning Outcomes

  • Recognise factors that can trigger mental illness
  • Be aware of the legislation underpinning mental health in care
  • Know why people self-harm
  • Understand what to do in the event of someone self-harming
  • Be aware of coping strategies
  • Understand the reasons why people commit suicide
  • Know how to support those who feel suicidal
  • Recognise when to seek urgent help
  • Know which possible ligature points are high risk
  • Be aware of the different types of ligature cutters, and how they are used
  • Know how to respond in the event of finding someone with a ligature in situ
  • Know how to deal with severe bleeds
  • Know how to deal with an unconscious casualty
