- Be aware of the possible complications, and how to deal with them
- Understand the relevance of the legislation that covers tracheostomies
- Recognise the steps and equipment for the procedure
- Understand how to keep the stoma and cannula clean and aseptic
- Know how and when to use suctioning to keep the airway clear
- Be aware of the dangers of thickened mucus, and how to treat it
